Flora Fountain is the heart of Bombay (Mumbai), its central business and financial district. And in this living throbbing heart is Afternoon House, the house where The Afternoon Despatch & Courier is daily planned, conceived, assembled and distributed. The paper is 18 years old, going 19, but the building is 90 year old, and it stands in a location where the city was first built, two centuries ago. The building's outside is steeped in antiquity, but inside it is gleaming with high-tech computerology and other modern publishing and printing technology. And the paper reflects the spirit of the building something old, something new, class and content.

You can't live in Bombay and not read at least one evening newspaper. The Afternoon Despatch & Courier is Bombay's most sought after evening tabloid. So it follows that the average Bombay person is an 'Afternoon' reader.

The 'Afternoon' was launched on March 25, 1985. It has a circulation of over 85,000 copies each day. It hits the streets of Bombay at 11 a.m. and by 1 p.m. it is in every nook and corner of the city.

Its Editor, Behram Contractor is an institution by himself, and has working for him a team of very dedicated, responsible and committed journalists.

The editorial quality is of the highest kind. A good deal of emphasis is placed on language. The sum total is that 'Afternoon' enjoys a vast and diverse readership based on a high credibility factor.

There are special sections on different days. Style on Mondays, Business Extra on Tuesdays, Bombay First on Wednesdays, Thursdays there is Woman's Extra and Fridays, In Touch, the supplement for the Youth of Bombay and Bollywood, all about Film people and Saturday is for Health.

Regular contributors writing weekly columns for the paper read like a 'Who's who' list of the journalistic fraternity. We have, Dom Moraes, Manohar Malgaonkar, M. J. Akbar, Vir Sanghvi, Tavleen Singh, Arun Shourie, Maneka Gandhi Khushwant Singh, Kuldip Nayar, Inder Malhotra, and J. B. D'souza.

The front page pocket cartoon is by the famous Cartoonist and Artist Mario Miranda.

On the last page is the legendary column Round and About by Busybee. It is said that Bombay folk don't begin their day without seeing R. K. Laxman's cartoon in the Times and end it without reading Busybee's Round and About in 'Afternoon', a column which is probably the world's longest running daily satarical piece being written for the last 35 years.

Oh well!
